Tidal Demonetizes 100-Percent AI-Generated Tracks

Tidal said it will no longer attribute royalties to tracks it determines are wholly AI-generated. The policy takes effect immediately for monetization. Starting July 15 the service will also apply an icon to label such tracks for listeners.
The company framed the move as protection for human artists. “Tidal's priority is ensuring royalties go to original works directly produced, written, and performed by people,” the announcement stated. It added that it would not knowingly pay creators for content it flags as entirely machine-made.
Tidal did not disclose the detection tools it plans to use. The service has positioned itself around high-fidelity audio and direct artist relationships, a stance that now extends to how it handles AI output.
No other major streaming platforms have announced matching rules. Tidal’s approach leaves the tracks available to users rather than removing them.
Why it matters
Tidal’s choice draws a clear line between human-created recordings and synthetic ones without banning the latter. For artists who already struggle with low per-stream payouts, the policy reinforces that only work traceable to people will receive compensation on the service. Listeners gain a visible marker on fully AI tracks, but the platform still accepts the uploads. The decision places the burden on Tidal to maintain accurate detection while avoiding payouts that could otherwise flow to automated content farms. Other services will face pressure to state their own positions soon.
